ESKISEHIR, CITY of EDUCATION and INDUSTRY
In university education of Turkey, Eskisehir takes an important role with two universities,
named Anadolu and Osmangazi. Eskisehir is the only city with two universities at
this city scale, after the biggest cities Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
Eskisehir also has a developing Organized Industrial Zone, and it is located in
the connection point of railway and highway between the capital Ankara and major
city Istanbul. With this location property, Eskisehir has become a developing industry
city in central Anatolia.
Industrial history of Eskisehir was begun right after the foundation of Turkish
Republic. Public Economic Agents (in Turkish; Kamu İktisadi Teşekkülü -KİT), such
as brick and tiling industry, sugar factory, fabric factory, and railway workshop,
were established immediately afterwards the foundation of Turkish Republic. At the
beginning, to accelerate the industry, Public Economic Agents were established in
Eskisehir, because the lack of private capital accumulation. It is interesting that,
names of some districts were taken from these agents, for example Şeker (means sugar),
Sümer (name of the Fabric Factory), shows the importance of these agents for the
city.
Later on Organized Industrial Zone were established beside the Ankara highway. Naturally,
industrial region were took a pioneer role in the improvement of the private sector,
in Eskisehir. Today, economic contribution of Organized Industrial Zone to the national
economy cannot be considered as undervalue with its significant industrial production.
Today’s cookie, textile, glass, refrigerator, tile and many other production branches
were established as small workshops, initially.
The identity of today’s Eskisehir outshines with its two big universities and its
developing industry. Additionally, Eskisehir also have a wealthy cultural heritage
depends on Nasreddin Hodja, Yunus Emre, and Phrygian Valley.
In Eskisehir, infrastructure and superstructure facilities were almost completed,
and also squatter housing is minimized by improvement plants. Additionally, with
the betterment on the Porsuk Creek, it becomes a symbol of Eskisehir and the mass
transportation was solved with Estram. All these facilities completed in last decade,
gained Eskisehir a modern European City appearance.
